3.1.1 Chromium plating test. The chromium plated steel test samples shall be tested for corrosion with the 5 percent neutral salt spray at 35°C in accordance with ASTM Test Method B-117. The test period shall not be less than 48 hours. After the specified exposure is completed, the specimen shall be visually examined to assure that the plating shows no evidence of peel, chip, uneven color, powder film, pits, or stain. Widely scattered spots of corrosion are permitted; however, none of these spots of corrosion shall exceed 1.6 mm along the greatest dimension.
3.1.2 Shelf test (static). This test shall be performed on both the size 1 and size 2 bookcases. The complete bookcase shall be placed on a level surface. Only one shelf shall be used. It shall be adjusted to the approximate mid-point (top-to-bottom). A load of 9.1 kg shall be placed on the shelf at both of the extreme sides for 5 minutes to assure that the shelf supports are fully engaging the shelf. This load shall then be removed. A dial indicator or equivalent measuring device shall be placed at the center of the front edge of the shelf. An evenly distributed non-rigid load totaling 68 kg shall be placed on the shelf and remain undisturbed for 15 minutes. Deflection shall then be recorded. The shelf shall not be deflected more than 4.8 mm. The load shall then be removed and the permanent distortion recorded. The shelf shall not have more than a 0.7 mm permanent set.
3.1.3 Leg attachment test. Each leg of the bookcase shall be tested as follows. The bookcase shall be inverted and restrained from movement. Two inches from the bottom of the leg under test, a force of 890 N shall be applied against the outside of the leg toward the center of the bookcase. This force shall be held against the leg not less than ten minutes. At the end of the ten minute time limit, the force shall be removed from the leg. Permanent distortion of the leg shall not exceed 4.75 mm. There shall be no weakening of the leg’s attachment to the bookcase. A dial indicator or equivalent measuring device shall be used for the above test.
3.1.4 Drop test. The glides shall be fully retracted. One end of the bookcase shall then be raised 152 mm and dropped onto the floor. Repeat the drop test on the other end of the bookcase. The bookcase shall then be examined. There shall be no broken welds, loose mechanical attachments, or visual, permanent distortion.
3.1.5 Leg security test. With the bookcase in an upside
