COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
CHAIR, ROTARY (GENERAL OFFICE, WOOD)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description in lieu of Interim Federal Specification AA-0-001628.
This commercial item description covers two types of rotary wood chairs made for heavy office use.
Salient characteristics:
Design. Contemporary style similar in appearance to chairs in figure I with padded and upholstered seat and back, rotary and tilt control, and casters.
Classification.
Type II. Rotary
Style A. Secretarial chair without arms.
Style B. Desk chair with arms.
Chair frame and base. Constructed of wood. Metal reinforcements are permitted provided they are not visible when viewing the chair from seat level or above. (excluding spindles and rotary mechanisms.)
Finish of frame and base. Walnut color matching Government standard sample FSS-L-01002, satin finish.
Rotary tilt mechanisms. Seat height and tilt tension shall be easily adjustable.

Adjustment instructions: Clearly illustrated each adjustment control and how to use it. Instructions attached to chair.
Fabric. One hundred percent flat nylon, dyed plain weave, minimum 21 oz./ Linear yd. (width 54 in.) exclusive of back coating; conformance with table I of ASTM D 3597 except; minimum breaking strength- 250 lbs; minimum tear strength- 20 lbs; surface abrasion test- 8,000 revolutions without a complete breakthrough of a yarn using Taber Abrader Method (with CS#10 wheels and 500 gr.load) in accordance with ASTM D 1175; minimum seam efficiency- 80 percent using method 5110 of Federal Test Method Standard 191.
Fabric color. Colors shall match the following Government standard with or without other padding material providing a comfortable, durable seat and back.
Casters. Wheel diameter; 2-1/2 inches; wheel tread; rubber or urethane with Shore duwometer D scale hardness of 33 to 46; ball bearing swivel.
Safety features. Tilt mechanisms must have positive tilt top in case of failure. Spindle must be prevented from accidentally detaching from base when seat is raised. Seat height must remain fixed when height is not being adjusted. Rotary-tilt mechanism must be securely and permanently attached to chair frame.
