Salient characteristics
These characteristics concisely describe the essential physical and functional/performance features of the commercially available item
Design. The filing cabinet shall be designed for heavy duty use, and shall be of the general appearance shown in figure 1
Classes Class C – 1 hour fire resistance
Types Type I – 2 drawers
Type II – 4 drawers
Type III – 3 drawers
Sizes Size 1 – Legal size
Size 2 – Letter size
Fire resistance Cabinet shall meet the requirements of Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. standard UL 72 for Class 350 – 1 hr insulated record containers
Drawers Minimum clear inside drawer dimensions shall be 10”H by 15”W by 24”D for Size 1 cabinets and 10”H by 12”W by 24”D for Size 2 cabinets. Drawers shall be equipped with adjustable follower blocks. Drawer suspension shall be the side-arm type or cradle type with balls or ball bearing rollers and shall operate easily and smoothly. Drawer shall be provided which allow removal of the drawer but shall prevent the drawer form dropping of alignment or separating from the suspension when fully extended.
Locks Cabinets shall be equipped with paracentric key operated locks allowing a minimum of 125 key changes. Two keys shall be provided. Activation of the locking mechanism shall securely lock all to contracting officer approval.
Finish the finish shall be textured or semigloss lacquer or baked enamel. Colors shall match Fed. Std. No. 595 black (27040), gray (26134) and parchment within the range delimited by (25686-26405). Alternatively, the manufacturer may provide his commercial black, gray or parchment finish subject to contracting officer approval.
Caster base When specified or the contract, the caster bases shall be provided. Casters shall be not less than 1-3/8 inch diameter and not less than 7/8 inch wide.
Identification label The identification label shall be white, with the contractor’s name or trademark, contract or order number, National Stock Number, month and year of manufacturer legibly marked in permanent dark ink. The label shall be affixed to the inside of the top drawer and shall not be removable by hand without defacement after being affixed for 4 hours.
Workmanship The workmanship shall be of the quality to produce finished cabinets acceptable in appearance, function and serviceability and to prevent potential hazard to personnel or their clothing.
Performance Cabinets shall meet the requirements of ANSI/ BIFMA Standard X5.3-1981 for Vertical Files.
Preservation, packaging, packing, labeling, and marking Preservation, packaging, packing, labeling, and marking shall be as specified in the contract or order.
